Today in history, November 4, 2008, the presidential election of 2008 will place an asterisk in the history of US Presidents next to the 44^th President as the first black American President, Barack Obama.  His name will be found on lists that include major historical events, American history, famous people in history, history of racial discrimination, famous black Americans, and historical event dates. The “Obama for President” theme was a dream for many Americans, particularly the Afro-American community.  Given very little chance to succeed at the start of the primary season in 2007, history channel will chronicle his journey to the White House.  The historical events timeline of his run for the Presidency began on a cold winter day on the steps of the Old Capitol in Springfield, Illinois, where President Abraham Lincoln announced his run for the Presidency almost one hundred fifty years before. This will be included among the interesting president facts that historically connect these two tall young lawyers from Illinois who made their way as little known individuals to the nation and reached the White House to heal a divided nation.  Each attracted attention of their political parties through speeches they gave prior to running for office.  And each will be historically mentioned in the almanac of Black American History.This day in history also makes internet history with the fact that prior to going out to make his Election Day victory speech Barack Obama texted a message to all his supporters.  His Speech in Grant Park in Chicago, Illinois, his home town, brought out almost a quarter of a million people and journalists from around the world.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends waiting at least six (6) months before introducing juice to your infant, and preferably one whole year. When your baby is ready for juice, it is important that you only serve your child 100% juice, and not juice drinks that add a lot of sugar.

Start out serving your infant juice in a cup not a bottle. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends limiting a serving of 4-6 ounces of 100% juice ages two through six, and after that 8 to 12 ounces for children seven years and older.

Medical studies indicate that the popular clear juice choices for babies are apple, pear, and white grape juice. Sorbitol is a natural carbohydrate that is difficult for the body to absorb, particularly in the delicate systems of infants and toddlers.

Of the three, white grape juice is sorbitol-free.Fructose and glucose—two natural sugars found in juice are evenly balanced in white grape juice; they are not in the apple and pear juice. Most research suggests that infants and toddlers have an easier time absorbing juice that has an even balance of natural sugars and is sorbitol-free.

When young stomachs are unable to absorb carbohydrates like sorbitol or excess fructose, a number of symptoms may present themselves, including gas, bloating, difficulty sleeping after feeding, painful discomfort, crying and diarrhea.

Results of improved digestibility came about with 100% white grape juice. Research also showed that during the recovery time following a bout with diarrhea, infants who drank white grape juice fared better than those who had apple juice; and also had less reoccurring cases of diarrhea. If your infant has had a history of colic you may want to choose a 100% white grape juice as their beginner juice to avoid future stomach pain, gas, and bloating.

Not all juices are a 100% white grape juice, be sure you read the label carefully. And for more information on the benefits of white grape juice be sure to talk to your pediatrician.

A recent analysis of government data revealed that children who consumed 100% juices had healthier diets overall than their non-juice consuming counterparts. Children beyond the age of two who drank 100% juice also consumed more fruits, more whole grains, and more key nutrients such as Vitamin C and potassium. This group had lower body mass indexes (BMIs) than the non juice drinkers.

Antioxidants are important for everybody young and old alike. Back to the coffee example… let’s say, you have four coupons for your brand of coffee. You purchase four cans of coffee and stock up at this price… and WHAM you just SAVED $22.00 for a 50% SAVINGS….much better than the average 10% that survey suggested. Even if you go out to the store just for the coffee that’s on SALE….YOU MADE A GREAT DEAL!

To keep your savings at a 50% level leads to Rule #5: TAKE ADVANTAGE of BUY 1 GET 1 FREE OFFERS, especially on products your family uses on a regular basis. Again, buy in Bulk.

Rule #6: BE FLEXIBLE with your shopping list when you see something on SALE: an item might not be on your shopping list this week; but you see that it’s on SALE, and you buy it. Now, there won’t be a need to put it on your shopping list for the next two or three weeks, and you SAVED.

Rule #7: ALWAYS ASK FOR A RAIN CHECK FOR A SALE ITEM that the store has run out of. This way you will be guaranteed not to miss out on the SALE ITEM. Rain checks can be good for one month or one year, depending on the store policy. (Hint: On the rain check ask for maximum amount of the item possible for a multiple purchase in the future).

TIPS FOR GROWING BETTER TASTING VEGGIES

Feed your veggies once per month with EPSOM SALT.  Epsom Salt, also called Magnesium Sulfate, is the core element of chlorophyll which is essential for proper Photosynthesis.  It helps lowering the soil’s ph.  Most plants, including vegetables, grow better at a neutral or slightly negative ph.  

Application: Dissolve one (1) to two (2) tablespoons of Epsom Salt in hot water (Epsom Salt dissolves faster in hot water) and mix it with one gallon of water.  Water plants thoroughly with this solution.If your plants show yellowing leaves, you might spray them with above mentioned solution until water runs off the leaves. Be sure to spray both sides of leaves.  Epsom Salt, Magnesium Sulfate, when applied as a foliar spray, will act faster than iron.  Iron is a common treatment for yellowing leaves.
